Here are the lengths that actually work, and how to cut down to them without hurting anyone's feelings. Spoiler: the shortest version is almost always the one that gets forwarded to the whole family.

How long should a birthday video be?

For most birthday videos, 15 to 60 seconds is ideal. A personal message sent to a phone works best at 15 to 45 seconds. A group video with several friends can run 2 to 4 minutes. A montage for a party screen should stay under 5. Short videos get watched twice; long ones get watched halfway.

How long should a birthday video message be for one person?

A personal birthday video message should be 15 to 45 seconds, which is about 40 to 110 spoken words. That's three to five sentences: their name, one memory or compliment, and a wish. It's short enough to watch on the way to work and long enough to feel like you meant it.

A handy rule: people speak about 2 to 2.5 words per second at a relaxed pace. So:

• 15 seconds fits about 35 words: two warm sentences.
• 20 seconds fits about 45 words: name, one memory, one wish.
• 30 seconds fits about 70 words: a mini story with an ending.

How long should a group birthday video be?

Aim for 2 to 4 minutes. With clips of 10 to 20 seconds each, that fits 8 to 15 people. If more people want in, shorten each clip rather than making the whole video longer. For a round birthday with lots of guests, two minutes of great clips beats seven minutes of everyone.

How should you split the seconds in a 30-second birthday video?

Put the name in the first two seconds, give the middle to one memory or joke, and save the last five seconds for the wish and a held final frame. Length matters less than shape: a 30-second video with a clear beginning, middle and end feels complete, while a 30-second ramble feels long.

• 0 to 2 seconds: their name, big, or your face saying it. This is when they decide to keep watching.
• 2 to 10 seconds: the setup. "Remember the camping trip where it rained for four days?"
• 10 to 22 seconds: the heart of it: the memory, the joke, or the thing you love about them.
• 22 to 27 seconds: the wish. "Happy birthday, Mia. Here's to drier tents."
• 27 to 30 seconds: hold the last frame, with the name or the age, so it can be paused and screenshotted.

The same shape stretches to a group video: a short opening card, the clips, and a final message from the closest person. It also shrinks: a 15-second card is just the name, one line, and the hold.

Does the length change with age?

A little. Young kids have tiny attention spans, so 15 to 30 seconds is plenty. Teens and adults on phones want short too. The one place longer works is a milestone party, like a 50th birthday or a grandparent's 80th, where a room of people is sitting down to watch together.

How do you cut a birthday video down?

1. Step 1

   Cut the intros. Delete every "Hey, so, um..." at the start of each clip. This alone saves 10 to 20%.

2. Step 2

   Remove the repeats. If three people say "you're so kind," keep the one who says it best.

3. Step 3

   Trim the music. Start the song at the chorus, not the 30-second intro.

4. Step 4

   End on the strongest moment. Cut everything after the best line. The video is over when it peaks.
