Group video gift vs animated video gift: which one to pick, honestly
Pick a group video (like Tribute or VidDay) when many people want to be in it and you have a week or more to collect clips. Pick an animated video gift when one person is giving it, time is short, or the story matters more than the faces.

There are two very different ways to give someone a video. One is a group video: friends, family or coworkers each record a short message, and a service stitches them into one keepsake. The other is an animated video gift: one short drawn film, made from your words, with a voice and music. Both can make someone cry happy tears. They just get there by different roads.

What is a group video gift?
A group video gift is a montage of video messages from lots of people, collected through one link and combined into one video. Tribute and VidDay are the best-known services. You invite people, they record on their phones, and you (or an editor) put it together. The magic is the faces: seeing thirty people who love you, one after another.
What is an animated video gift?
An animated video gift is a short drawn film made for one person: their name, their habits, a story about them, told with a voice, music and sound. Nobody has to appear on camera. It's made by one giver, usually in one sitting. The magic is the story: something that could only be about them.

How much does a group video gift cost?
Tribute's DIY plan is $35 for videos up to 30 minutes, $49 for 31 to 60 minutes and $99 beyond that, and you can draft for free. Its Concierge option, where an editor arranges and polishes the video, is $99. VidDay is free to make and preview, and you pay to finish: $5 for up to 3 minutes, rising in steps to $60 for the longest videos. VidDay also has a Personal membership at $59.99 a year for 6 videos (as listed on their site in September 2026).
For a single gift, a group video is very affordable. The real cost is time: yours, spent chasing people.
An animated gift flips that. Nine is a monthly plan rather than a one-off price, so it costs more for a single gift than a short VidDay video. What you buy is the film arriving today, made by you alone, without a single reminder email.
When is a group video the better gift?
When the crowd is the message. A retirement after thirty years, a grandmother's 90th, a best friend moving abroad: hearing from everyone at once is the gift, and no drawn film can replace thirty real voices.
- The person loves being celebrated in public.
- Many people genuinely want to take part.
- You have at least a week, ideally two.
- You have someone organized to send reminders (possibly you).
When is an animated video gift the better choice?
When there's one giver, little time, or a story to tell. A partner's birthday, a thank-you to a mentor, a gift for someone who hates being on camera or would hate a video of everyone they know.
- The last-minute save It's their birthday tomorrow and the group chat is asleep.
- The one-to-one gift From you to them, not from the whole office.
- The private person They'd rather die than watch forty colleagues say nice things.
- The inside joke A story only the two of you would get, told in thirty drawn seconds.
- The long-distance hello You're far away and you want to arrive in their phone with something made.
Can you do both?
Yes, and it can be lovely. Use a short animated film as the opening card, with their name and one line, then play the group video. Or send the animated film on the morning of the birthday and save the group video for the party.
- Step 1
Decide what the day needs. A public moment, a private one, or both.
- Step 2
Start the group video early. Send the invite at least a week ahead, with a deadline two days before the real one.
- Step 3
Make the animated opener. One line that sets the tone: "Thirty years. Seven desks. One legendary mug."
- Step 4
Put them together. Play the short film first, then the group video.

Making the animated one in Nine
If the animated route fits, here is how it works in Nine. Type one sentence ("my partner's 35th, she sings in the car and can't park"), use a simple template with a name and one line, or record your own voice so the film runs as long as you talk and carries your voice. The crew makes a short drawn film while you watch, with a voice, music and sound effects, and checks it before you see it.
Say what to change in plain words and get a new version. You get a video file in wide, tall and square, to send yourself by text, WhatsApp or email. The Film plan is $29 a month for films up to 20 seconds, excluding VAT. See pricing or try it.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to make a group video gift?
Plan for at least a week to collect clips, ideally two, plus time to put it together. Most of the time goes into waiting for people to record, so set a deadline a couple of days before you actually need it.
Is Tribute or VidDay cheaper?
For a short video, VidDay is cheaper: $5 for up to 3 minutes. Tribute's DIY plan starts at $35 for up to 30 minutes, and its Concierge editing is $99, as listed on their sites in September 2026.
What if not enough people send a video?
Send reminders with a copyable starter line, and give an early deadline. If only a few arrive, keep it short. A tight two-minute video with five heartfelt clips beats a long one full of filler.
Can I make a video gift if the person hates being filmed?
What is a good last-minute video gift?
One made by one person. A short animated film or a heartfelt self-recorded message can be done in an evening, without waiting on anyone else.
